About this place
The special tendon has left a memorable impression on diners who say its tempura stays crisp even under the sauce. One lunchtime account describes rice covered with nori and topped with two prawns, squid, chicken, vegetables and dashi-maki tamago, a rolled omelette seasoned with dashi. Another diner enjoyed the tempura softened by the sauce. It is a good choice if you like to bring the textures of tempura, sauce and rice together.
Another lunchtime option is the signature tamago-toji tendon, with tempura bound in softly cooked egg. A diner praised its generous toppings, tender egg and dashi flavour, and noted that the meal came with salad, soup and pickles. Choose the special tendon for the sauce and the texture of the tempura, or the tamago-toji for the comforting combination of egg and dashi.
For tempura by the piece, choices include kuruma prawn, conger eel, aubergine, maitake mushroom and kakiage, a mixed-ingredient fritter. One lunchtime diner also enjoyed a set combining tempura with Yamagata soba, making it an alternative to tendon.
In the evening, kaiseki meals pair an omakase selection of tempura with dishes such as a starter and sashimi. The Seasonal Omakase Tempura Kaiseki Tsubaki includes eight or nine kinds of seasonal tempura, along with a starter, sashimi, a palate cleanser, a main dish, a choice of tendon, tencha or soba, and dessert. It suits a relaxed meal built around tempura. The Botan kaiseki is available by reservation only, made by the previous day.
Tempura Chiso Wabisuke is in Midorigaoka. At lunch, diners can choose tendon or a set with soba; in the evening, the menu includes individual dishes and kaiseki, with sake to accompany the meal.
